Karikala Chola was one of the greatest rulers of Chola dynasty.
Karikala was a Tamil Chola king who ruled southern India.


The dating of his reign has yet to be clarrified as no clear proofs are available. The former, unlike his father, is said to have been a repentant son who supported Vaishnavism. He was also known by names such as Karikala Peruvalathan and Thirumavalavan. According to Sastri, Krimikanta or Adhirajendra Chola was killed in a local uprising of the Vaishnavas. This is natural when a hero with high talents was given prominence among the people. He is credited with the conquest of the whole of India up to the Himalayas and the construction of the flood banks of the river Kaveri.

Aditya Karikalan or Aditya II was a Chola prince who lived in the tenth century in South India.

He is recognised as the greatest of the Early Cholas. His father, Ilamcetcenni, was a powerful ruler of the Chola kingdom.

'Karikala' means 'elephant feller' or 'charred leg', which is assumed to be a reference to an accident by fire which befell the prince early in his life. Karikala's father was Ilamcetcenni, a brave king and a hard fighter. Karikala Chola alias Thirumavalavan happened to take his thrown in the very Young age.

He was the early Chola king ruled during the Sangam era. According to "Koil Olugu" (temple records) of the Srirangam temple, Kulottunga Chola III was the son of Krimikanta Chola or Karikala Chola.
