‘The possibilities of paint are never-ending,’ Frank Bowling tells me as we near the end of our conversation at his home in Pimlico, central London. Richard Sheridan Franklin Bowling OBE RA LG (born 29 February 1936), known as Frank Bowling, is a Guyana-born British artist who is widely considered to be one of the most distinguished artists to emerge from post-war British art schools. Bowling, who lives in London and has strong connections to the New York and London art scenes, reminisces over the golden years of abstraction, recalls eating steak with Hockney, and offers advice for young painters in a digital era. His paintings relate to Abstract expressionism, Color Field painting and Lyrical Abstraction.

Adopting an Abstract Expressionist vernacular since the mid-1960s when he moved to New York, Frank Bowling paints in a unique style that draws from abstraction and his Guyanese heritage.
