Forgiveness is Freedom

After weeks of waiting for it, I’m finally in the holiday spirit.

Maybe it was watching Love, Actually.

Maybe it was serenading a friend last night, with Christmas carols, in the middle of a health food store.

Maybe it was dancing with Blake in our kitchen this morning, complete with twirls.

Or maybe, it was the gift I decided to give myself...

Yesterday morning I stumbled across this quote:

“It’s one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself, to forgive. Forgive everybody.” –Maya Angelou

You know that heady feeling—the sensation of lightness, almost dizziness—that rushes over you? The butterflies in your whole body? The sense of whoosh, like something big rushing into your life?

That’s being struck by truth, by inspiration, by a divine idea that you need to run with.

And that’s exactly what happened to me when I read that quote.

Reading it, I got the chills. I have the chills writing it, just now:

"It’s one of the greatest gifts you can gift yourself, to forgive. Forgive everybody."

That idea, those words, they have been whispering to me. They have been telling me a story about possibility, and I want to share that story with you:

“Darling, come here. This is what you really need.

Let go.

Let it go.

You know the it I am talking about. That thing, that pain, that you believe makes you, well, you.

I am here to tell you it doesn’t.

Soften your precious hands. Release your ferocious grip on the past, on all of the things you have done, to yourself and others.

And let it go.

Let it float away.

Away from you. Away from your tired body. Away from your busy mind.

Imagine who you could be if you didn’t have to carry the weight of resentment, shame, guilt, and anger with you.

Imagine what you could do, create, be.

Imagine the life you could have.

Imagine the love, the fun, the beauty, the adventure, the life that you could have if you just let. it. go.

You can have that life.

This isn’t a far-flung dream.

This is real life, right now.

And you can change your story. Right now.

You. Can. Forgive.

Forgive everybody. And please, forgive yourself."

That’s what this quote has been whispering to me, for more than 24 hours now. I LOVE it!

Doesn’t all that just sound so good? Forgive everybody!

Be the Oprah of forgiveness! “You get forgiveness! YOU get forgiveness! Everybody gets forgivenessssssss!”

Let’s be clear: forgiveness isn’t saying that you should just “forget about it”.

It’s not even saying "it’s okay”. Some things simply aren’t okay, and they are never going to be okay, and that itself is fine! Sometimes, people do shitty, horrible things.

Sometimes, you’re the person who has done those shitty, horrible things.

Forgiveness isn’t about ignoring the things that have happened.

Forgiveness is about giving yourself the gift of releasing heavy, negative energy and emotions, so that you can keep growing.

Forgiveness is about recognizing that whatever that person did, they did because they didn’t know how to do better.

That goes for you, too. So go ahead and forgive yourself for not knowing how to do better. It’s okay.

Forgive yourself so that you can learn to do better. So that you can grow.

I’ve decided to give myself the gift of forgiveness this year, and it feels so good.

I truly hope you give yourself the very same gift.

Go ahead, darling. Lighten your load.

Forgiveness is freedom.

I’m sending love your way.
